UK Motorcycle Licence Categories
In the UK, motorcycle licences are split into several categories based on:
your age
the bike's engine size/power
whether you've passed CBT and practical tests
The main categories are:

Getting On The Road
Step 1 — Get a Provisional License
Before riding on public roads, you need a UK provisional driving licence.

Step 2 — Complete CBT (Compulsory Basic Training)
CBT is the first legal requirement for most new riders.
With a CBT you can:
ride up to a 125cc
use L plates
ride alone
ride for 2 years
You cannot:
carry passengers
ride on motorways
remove L plates

To get a full licence you will normally take:

off-road manoeuvres

Important Rules
Helmets
You must wear an approved motorcycle helmet securely fastened on UK roads.
Insurance
Motorcycle insurance is legally required.
MOT & Tax
Your motorcycle must be taxed and MOT-tested when applicable.
If You Already Have a Car Licence
If you passed your car test before February 2001, you may ride a moped without CBT.
If you passed after 2001, CBT is still required for mopeds.
